When it comes to the inky, infinite expanse of outer space and mankind’s never-ending quest to chart it, few names in horology carry as much weight as Omega’s. Continuing its storied relationship with space exploration, Omega has resurrected one of its most iconic timepieces—the Speedmaster— and given it a new lease on life with the implementation of modern Co-Axial Master Chronometer technology.
Originally launched in 1959 and marked by its reference number CK 2998, this watch was the second generation in the legendary Speedmaster family. It set itself apart from the f irst Speedmaster model introduced in 1957 with a series of distinctive design elements, such as the slender Alpha hands, a symmetrical case, and a dark bezel—elements that no doubt caught the eye of NASA astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra, leading him to purchase one and wear it on the historic Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury programme on 3 October 1962.
It was this thermospheric sojourn that solidif ied the CK 2998’s legacy, earning it the enduring nickname ‘The First Omega in Space’ and the beginning of a profound connection between Omega and the cosmos.
