GOOGLE PIXEL 7A

How does a company already dominant in the mid-range phone market go about improving its position? It drops a phone that really doesn't feel mid-range at all, and prices it reasonably enough that many won't notice that it's actually £50 more expensive than its predecessor.

GOOGLE PIXEL 7A

£449, store.google.com

For your extra half ton, the Pixel 7a does offer a lot. You may notice a chunkier back, with a camera bar reminiscent of the main line Pixel 7; that's there to hold a new and improved camera system, comprising a 64MP wide angle sensor along with a 13MP ultrawide companion.

Our early tests suggest they make a serious pair, and while you don't get an optical zoom (that's definitely not mid-range tech, as much as Google is pushing the envelope), the 2x digital zoom makes use of the sensor's pixel allowance for a pretty seamless magnification.
