For centuries, international artists, photographers and filmmakers visiting India have been captivated by the Taj Mahal. They have all captured the beauty and splendour of this monument with their own methods. For Charles William Bartlett (18601940), this method was ukiyo-e, the Japanese art of woodblock print-making and painting. Having travelled to Japan and collaborated with woodblock publisher Shozaburo Watanabe, Bartlett then travelled to India and applied these methods to the sights and monuments of India, especially the Taj Mahal.
