THE rocketing population means that recruiting 20,000 more police officers will not help combat the crime epidemic, it has been claimed.

Brian Booth, acting deputy national chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said many issues are hampering frontline attempts to win back public confidence - with the challenges brought about by rising migration numbers at the forefront.

He said that while the total number of officers had been brought back up to previous levels, rises in the population mean that the increase is "insignificant" in the overall picture.
