SHOAIB BASHIR’S head is still spinning at the end of a year that has changed his life.

The young off-spinner made his first-class debut for Somerset just 17 months ago.

Having turned 21 last month, he not only featured in England’s team for the first time in February, he has now delivered more Test overs than any bowler in world cricket in 2024.

His opening-day performance, on a Christchurch pitch that is normally a graveyard for spinners, gave England the upper hand in the first of three Tests against New Zealand.
