Mayhem for motorists

RAIN-battered Britain faced yet more downpours yesterday adding to flooding fears and travel chaos.

Conditions for drivers were particularly hazardous with a lorry falling 60 feet from the Thelwall Viaduct on the M6 near Warrington, Cheshire, during one rainstorm. The vehicle crashed on to an embankment below.

Firefighters used specialist equipment to lower themselves down to reach the driver who is not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

They also managed to contain a leak of about 220 gallons of biodiesel from the vehicle's fuel tanks following the crash on Monday evening.

During the wettest September on record for several counties in England, early Met Office figures suggest a number of areas across Britain experienced more than 250% of their average rainfall during the month.
