France averts 'catastrophe' of National Rally seizing power as partie's unite in polls fight

FRANCE'S far-right National Rally looked to have been defeated in national elections after a shock exit poll last night.

Marine Le Pen's party were ahead after the first round of voting but the country's left-wing and centrist parties united to stop her.

More than 200 candidates dropped out of the second round to allow an opponent a clear run at the National Rally (RN) candidates.

Last night's projections put RN in third place with 115-150 out of 577 seats, needing 289 for a majority.
