GARETH SOUTHGATE may find a back three is his flexible friend if he changes England's formation tonight against Switzerland.

After struggling to get a tune out of his 4-2-3-1 system in four games, Southgate is believed to be considering a 3-4-2-1 shape in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

And I have to say that's his best chance of getting the most out of his most creative players.

For what it's worth, I would go with Kyle Walker, John Stones and Ezri Konsa at the back, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bukayo Saka as wing-backs, Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo in central midfield, with Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden as two No.10s behind Harry Kane.

That would be harsh on Cole Palmer and Ivan Toney, who made important contributions off the bench in the close shave against Slovakia on Sunday.

But if you want square pegs in square holes and round pegs in round holes, that would give England balance.
