A LABOUR MP was suspended last night after footage appeared to show him punching a man.Mike Amesbury was seen in the video seemingly striking the man during the altercation in the early hours of Saturday.A CCTV clip shows the backbencher - an MP since 2017 - swinging his left hand at the other man.The footage as seen by the Mirror does not show the pair's conversation in the lead-up to the alleged punch.After it was published, a Labour spokesman said: "Mike Amesbury has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident.<img src="https://cdn.magzter.com/1583503328/1730078342/articles/f67BIG6jG1730091025335/7220796026.jpg" alt="image">"The Labour Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury's membership pending an investigation." The incident came to light when phone footage appeared to show the former shadow minister standing over a man who was lying on the pavement. Mr Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, could be heard telling him: "You won't ever threaten me again." Later, the CCTV clip emerged, showing the man being hit six times. Hours earlier, Labour's Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said it was a "matter for police" when asked if Mr Amesbury would be suspended.She said: "Mike Amesbury, who is the MP in question, has gone forward to the police."He is co-operating with any investigation they would want to take forward. It is a matter for the police and we want to allow them to do that work."She added: "I think that's the right approach. And, of course, the police should act in whatever way they see fit." Cheshire police confirmed officers were called to reports of an attack in Frodsham, part of Mr Amesbury's constituency, at 2.48am. The force said last night: "A 55-year-old man has been voluntarily interviewed under caution."He has since been released pending further inquiries." Mr Amesbury was a Manchester city councillor before becoming an MP.<img src="https://cdn.magzter.com/1583503328/1730078342/articles/f67BIG6jG1730091025335/6939761307.jpg" alt="image">On Saturday, he said: "Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during the incident."I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, co-operate with any inquiries."I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community."
