It was so far past its eat-by date that I feared it might escape and run off down the street if I left the door open.Still wrapped in cellophane, it looked edible. But we didn't know what it was. We'd never had one before.I didn't even know how to spell it. I thought it ended in an 'I' like spaghetti or ravioli. Them, we knows about. Our vintage panettone must have been a present, because it was in a fancy box with a ribbon on the top, and that's not our style of shopping.It turned out to be an Italian delicacy, a cross between a cake and a bread. We ate it, mystified but satisfied. And there the matter would have ended, if I hadn't written about the subject on a slow diary day (too many of those), and for the generosity of Mirror readers.Their gifts have reminded us of this Christmas treat ever since, and this year I thank, again, Sue and Roger Bishop of Cheltenham, Glos, for sending us a panettone. And not just any panettone, but a deluxe chocolate number, made in Italy, "a festive and delicate all-butter sweet bread, naturally leavened for softness and packed with chocolate chips". Fair trade chocs, naturally.Our gift survived the merciless attentions of Royal Mail to arrive in the post, with a card wishing us a Merry Christmas, adding: "This may have become a bit of a tradition now!"The best-before date is 6/2025. Many thanks... And we've learned our lesson. This one won't last the Christmas holiday.So here's best wishes to you both, and to every Mirror reader.
