ROADS ground to a standstill yesterday as temperatures plummeted enough to bring out gritting lorries, while rain and melting snow sparked flooding chaos.

The Met Office expects the coldest nights of the year this week, with temperatures potentially falling to -14C tonight and -16C tomorrow night, both in the north-east of England and Scotland.

And some faced worse problems than being stuck in traffic.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has attended dozens of call-outs since Monday and a danger-to-life warning was issued yesterday for the River Soar near Barrow upon Soar.
