THOUSANDS of families returned to their homes in southern Lebanon as the Israel-Hezbollah truce took effect yesterday.

Roads were jammed with people desperate to get back to areas heavily bombed for more than two months.

The US and France-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah came into effect at 4am.

But hours later, Israel Defence Forces said it had twice fired at "suspects" in southern Lebanon.

The ceasefire comes after nearly 14 months of fighting in the country.
