Pill 'can stub out smoking'

THE NHS is rolling out a daily stop smoking pill that could save thousands of lives and the service millions of pounds.

Varenicline works by reducing the cravings for nicotine and easing withdrawal symptoms.

NHS England forecasts it will be used by 85,000 people a year. And University College London analysis shows it could prevent up to 9,500 smoking deaths in the five years after its rollout.

NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard will announce the project in a speech today.
