Some 4,102 people were in hospital with flu on Christmas Day, rising to 5,074 on December 29, according to NHS England data.
Cases had quadrupled in a month from 1,190 on November 29.
Last week's daily average of 4,469 was three-and-a-half times higher than for the same week last year. Of these, 211 were critically ill with flu.
