HEALTH Secretary Wes Streeting has told Labour MPs he will vote against a Bill to change the law on assisted dying.The Cabinet minister said he had changed his mind on the issue since voting for it almost a decade ago.Last week Labour's Kim Leadbeater introduced to the Commons a Bill that would let the terminally ill get help ending their lives.The issue will next month be debated in the Commons for the first time since 2015, when a similar Bill was defeated by 330 votes to 118.Mr Streeting said yesterday: "I have in my mind's eye, when thinking about this, one of my grandmothers who died a very long, slow painful death from lung cancer when I was 10.CARE"There were so many moments in those final months when I would have given anything to stop the pain and would have wished for her to have the choice." But he added to LBC: "Having done this job for a few months... I think in order to be a real choice, we need to have high-quality palliative care available for everybody who needs it."And bluntly, we don't." Mr Streeting said he also worried about family coercion. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is of the same opinion, saying her Muslim faith made her belief in the "sanctity and value of human life" unshakeable.Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke in favour of assisted dying earlier this year, promising campaigner and stage 4 cancer sufferer Dame Esther Rantzen there would be a vote.He has said MPs should have a free vote on the issue.
