DONALD Trump has appointed billionaire pal Elon Musk to his White House team, as he surrounds himself with loyalists unlikely to question his motives.

The US president-elect made the controversial X and Tesla boss leader of the Department of Government Efficiency, which will slash budgets.

Trump also appointed other figures to key posts without any relevant experience, including former Fox News host Pete Hegseth as secretary of defence.

Former New York congressman Lee Zeldin becomes head of the Environmental Protection Agency, just two years after he vowed to axe a fracking ban Democrats imposed.

He also voted against certifying Trump's 2020 election loss.
