Reeves lines up ₤40bn tax hike and cuts blitz

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves is eying £40billion in tax rises and spending cuts to avoid inflicting fresh austerity on public services.

Reeves has warned the Cabinet there would be "difficult decisions on spending, welfare, and tax" to come in the Budget on October 30.

She is believed to be seeking ways to plug the £22billion black hole in public finances left by the Tories, along with billions of pounds to protect Whitehall departments from cuts.
