THE DIGITAL PERSONAL Data Protection Bill, which was cleared by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, will also address data privacy issues arising out of emerging AI technologies such as ChatGPT and Google Bard, officials said. The Bill will be tabled in the Parliament during the monsoon session which begins from July 20.
The Bill proposes to levy a penalty of ₹250 crore on entities for every instance of data breach, which can go up to a maximum of ₹500 crore. For penalties beyond this, amendments to the law would be required which would need parliamentary approval. Official sources said that provisions with regard to AI-related breaches will keep on evolving as it's an emerging technology.
