ON THE EVE of the meeting for unity here, likely to be attended by 26 parties, the Opposition appeared divided over giving the grouping a name and on formulating a common minimum programme.
Informal discussions were held on Monday, and the parties indicated they would discuss a common name and programme at the formal, closed-door talks Tuesday.
The Congress, which said before the talks that a decision on seat-sharing may take some time, added that the meeting would be a "game changer" in Indian politics, with a united Opposition offering solutions to the issues of the common people. Those present at the informal talks on Monday included Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M K Stalin, West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, among others.
With Mumbai abuzz about the developments in the NCP, with rebel leaders including Ajit Pawar calling on Sharad Pawar for the second day in a row, the Congress asserted that the NCP supremo who was not present in Bengaluru on Monday will be attending the discussions Tuesday.
