RANCHI:
The year also saw central probe agency officials under scrutiny and a harrowing incident of a foreign tourist being gang-raped.
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) arrested Hemant Soren on January 31, shortly after he resigned as chief minister following an interrogation in a land scam case. While the Jharkhand high court granted him bail after four months in custody, enabling him to reassume his role as chief minister, his imprisonment marked a significant event in the state’s political landscape this year.
After Hemant Soren, state parliamentary affairs minister Alamgir Alam was arrested on May 15. The ED apprehended the senior leader after recovering ₹35 crore in cash between May 6 and May 8 from various locations, including the office of Alam’s officer on special duty (OSD) and the OSD’s servant.
The ED concluded that the cash was collected as a commission for awarding tenders to successful bidders for government work. In Jharkhand, not only were ministers accused, but ED officials also faced allegations, with FIRs registered against them.
