When Zhanna Samsonova, a Russia-based food influencer died in July, it paved way for a debate on extreme veganism. While her cause of death is yet to be ascertained, reports claim that the 39-year-old who used to survive on an all-raw vegan diet had "died of starvation and exhaustion". Daily Mail reported that her diet consisted of only "fruits, sunflower seed sprouts, fruit smoothies and juices, for the last five years." Her mother, Vera, on the other hand, attributed her death to a "cholera-like infection" that was exacerbated by her diet. However, the incident has raised concerns about extreme raw vegan diets and the nutritional deficiency a practitioner may experience.
