CIARA MAGEEAN’S brave bid for World Championship glory ended in “bittersweet” fashion in Budapest last night.
The Portaferry star finished just one place outside the medals in a new national record time of 3.56.61 in what was a stacked 1500m final.
It was won, as expected, by Kenya’s now three-time world champion Faith Kipyegon.
In a dramatic last lap, Mageean was third coming down the home straight and but was passed on the final bend by Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.
She battled to the end but just lost out on the bronze, with Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia claiming silver.
So Ireland’s 28-year wait for a World Championship medal on the track goes on, at least until tonight when Rhasidat Adeleke gets her chance in the 400m final.
But Mageean can be proud of her effort, having run a tactically sound race before just losing out down the home straight.
