PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has paid tribute to Cork GAA legend Teddy McCarthy on his sudden passing at the age of 57.

The father-of-three, who was the only player ever to win All-Ireland senior hurling and football medals in the same year in 1990, "will always hold a special place in the history of Irish sport," said President Higgins.

"As the only player to ever win All-Ireland titles in hurling and football championships in the same year, it seems increasingly unlikely that his remarkable achievement in 1990 will ever be repeated.
