WOMEN'S NATIONS LEAGUE

SAVANNAH McCARTHY has swapped one long journey for another.

After spending 15 months recovering from a horror knee injury, she now spends hours every week driving from her home in Kerry to Dublin for training with Shamrock Rovers.

McCarthy ripped not one, but three ligaments in her knee when she collided with her own goalkeeper in a freak training ground accident while at Galway.

It also ruled her out of Ireland’s World Cup squad – a bitter blow after she had established herself in Vera Pauw’s side early in the qualification campaign.

McCarthy is back in the international fold and is gunning for a starting spot in Saturday’s historic Nations League clash with Northern Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.

Whether or not she makes Eileen Gleeson’s 11, she is just happy that she doesn’t have to see the inside of her car for the next week or so.
