IT was another washout weekend as the tail end of former Hurricane Nigel lashed the country bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

But a lot worse could be on the way as a weather system approaching Ireland from the Atlantic has the potential to bring winds of over 100kph and develop into the first storm of the season.

Weather presenter Barra Best said that the as-yet-unnamed storm could have the potential to cause structural damage when it makes landfall midweek.

In a TikTok post he said there is some "potentially damaging and disruptive weather heading our way in the middle of next week". He added: "It's going to come in from the Atlantic reaching the south-west of Ireland before moving north and east.
