MET Eireann could officially declare Ireland is in the grip of heatwave tomorrow as temperatures soared towards 29C this week.

Tuesday was the hottest day of the year so far when thermometers in the Midlands recorded searing readings.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Our synoptic station at Oak Park in Co Carlow reached 28.8C.

"Numerous stations right across the country are seeing temperatures in excess of 25C." Temperature of 25C on at least five consecutive days is the threshold which must be passed before meteorologists declare a heatwave.
