The officer, who was responding to a call on Berkeley Street in the Mountjoy area of Dublin, was allegedly set upon and subjected to a vicious attack at around 11.15am yesterday.

The officer, who is based in Mountjoy Garda station, suffered a damaged eye socket and facial injuries that required stitches.

The officer was taken to Dublin's Mater Hospital and has since been released to continue his recovery at home.

However, the horrific incident means the officer will be absent from work.

The garda's colleague was also allegedly assaulted during the incident but thankfully did not need to be taken to hospital.
