STRETCHING over the horizon, this greenhouse complex is so big it can be seen from space.

Nicknamed El Mar de Plastico, or Sea of Plastic, the 185-square-mile mass of polytunnels near Spain's Costa del Sol produces 2.7million tons of fruit and veg a year worth €1billion - about half of Europe's supply.

It provides firms including Tesco and Asda with cucumbers, peaches, watermelons and tomatoes almost year-round.
