€7m budget for this year to oversee excavation and re-interment of remains

A DIRECTOR has been appointed to oversee the excavation and recovery of children's remains at the site of a Mother and Baby Home.

Daniel Mac Sweeney, a former International Committee of the Red Cross envoy, will oversee the process at Tuam, Co Galway.

He was appointed following a recruitment campaign run through the Public Appointments Service.

A key first priority will be to engage with relatives, survivors and former residents of the Tuam institution.

Mr Mac Sweeney will also ensure the remains are re-interred in a respectful and appropriate way.
