Organisers say triathlon was ‘not sanctioned’ due to weather

Newly engaged man one of two to die in Ironman swim event

THESE are the faces of the two tragic men who died after getting into difficulty during an Ironman swimming event. 

Brendan Wall, 44, who was originally from Meath, passed away during the 1.7km water section of the triathlon.

Canadian Ivan Chittendon, 65, from Toronto, also died in Youghal, Co Cork, on Sunday morning.

National governing body Triathlon Ireland last night said its technical officers could not sanction the race due to the weather.

Its chief Darren Coombes added: “Due to adverse conditions on the day, Triathlon Ireland technical officials confirmed to the race organisers that it was not possible to sanction the race.
