The President and his wife Sabina arrived at the Phoenix Park just after 10am on Thursday to open the annual summer event.
And he said it had become "more important" than simply for promoting garden designs.
The President had developed into "a gathering in celebration of the role of nature and the importance of biodiversity". But he warned of the "alarming rate" at which biodiversity loss and climate change is happening.
