EXCITED punters are giddying up to splash out tens of millions of euro at the Galway Races which gets under starters orders today.

Up to 150,000 fans are set to hit the Ballybrit course over the seven-day festival, with up to 40,000 expected on Ladies' Day.

Described as the "crown jewel in the Irish racing calendar" the event is also renowned for the party atmosphere in the city after each day.

While the weather forecast for the week is not what is expected for a normal August, the damp conditions will suit some horses if not the punters.

Bookmakers will be hoping for another bonanza and with the economy cantering along in top form there will be plenty of money about.

The long-awaited Summer Festival kicks off with a full seven races running including the The Connacht Hotel (QR) Handicap.
