MET Eireann ended its torrential rainfall alerts but there is no let-up with days of heavy rainfall forecast until at least next Wednesday.

A Status Orange rain warning in place for Cork and Waterford and a Status Yellow one for 11 other counties expired last night.

Thousands of residents across Carlow, Dublin, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Offaly, Tipperary, Wexford, and Wicklow stayed at home because of the warnings.

However, no major incidents were reported in worst affected counties Cork and Waterford while councils elsewhere yesterday assessed potential damage. Rainfall in excess of 50mm was expected in a 24-hour period.
