WEARING a hearing aid significantly slashes the risk of dementia in people who are hard of hearing, a study found.

Research in The Lancet found those who did not use hearing aids had a 42 per cent higher risk of developing dementia within 12 years compared to those who use them.

The study found this occurs because the brain is forced to work harder in other regions at the memory system's expense.
