We have lost humanity in treatment of the refugees

THE behaviour in Clare this week was shameful. We have lost our humanity.

We have lost humanity in treatment of the refugees

We’re no longer a progressive country if we cannot welcome those seeking asylum here.

A protest at the Magowna House Hotel in Inch, consisting of a handful of cones blocking the entrance with people ‘standing guard’, made me feel ashamed to be Irish.

Migrant support groups rightly reacted in horror after protestors boarded a bus carrying refugees and proceeded to carry out a headcount.

What made it even worse was the fact that the protestors filmed the men on the bus. Scenes of asylum seekers carrying one little rucksack – containing their only possessions – en route back to Dublin would make even the hardest hearts crumble.

Now they face sleeping on the streets in a tent which carries its own risks, as was borne out last weekend in Sandwith Street.
