But the success with which Ferguson landed his targets only made those rare failures stand out more.
Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne were two who escaped the net. But another high-profile miss was Alessandro Del Piero, a forward who left a lasting impression on United stars during Champions League clashes with Juventus in the 1990s.
"Del Piero is the only one who I would've gone mad for," Ferguson told Inside Sport.
