There are currently no exact figures for how many jobs will be brought with the headquarters, the M.E.N. understands, but the government is pledging to 'double the civil servant presence in Manchester in four years'.
There are currently almost 200 staff based in Greater Manchester already working for DSIT and Building Digital UK.
Staff will be based in Trinity Bridge House, near Salford Central Station, where there are already civil service offices. The announcement forms part of the government's Places for Growth programme, a commitment to grow the number of civil service roles outside of London and the south-east to 22,000 by 2027 - moving its target forward from 2030.
The government says that opening a second headquarters will position DSIT at 'the heart of a community that has played a pivotal role in shaping scientific and technological advancements in the UK, citing Greater Manchester's 'industrial legacy and pioneering spirit'.
