Ivy gets a bad rep, mainly because of the pagan Christmas Carol 'The Holly and the Ivy! The lyrics of early versions of the folk song are not complementary to this heart-shaped plant: "Holly and his merry men, they dance and they sing/ivy and her maidens, they weep and they wring."
My grandad used to tell me that ivy was evil. He was at constant war with the invasive greenery threatening his rose bushes.
