United confirmed the sale of Greenwood on a permanent deal to Marseille for EUR31.6m (£26.6m) on Thursday and the forward has moved to France on a five-year contract.
The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Getafe after United decided 'it would be most appropriate for him' to continue his career away from Old Trafford. Charges were dropped against Greenwood for attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault in February 2023. He has always denied the allegations.
United made the decision to sell Greenwood this summer and the club believe his exit has delivered on their commitment that he would continue his career elsewhere. They have also inserted a sell-on clause into the deal to earn a sizable share of any future transfer.
Last summer, United planned to reintegrate Greenwood into the first team squad, but the news leaked and an intense backlash followed, which prompted a U-turn.
