After around a month-and-a-half on the ward, he was finally able to go up to the roof of the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and breathe fresh air.
The precious play area at the top of the hospital is used by thousands of young patients like Hughie to be outside, enjoy time to play and get a welcome break.
But the much-loved park is in 'desperate need of a revamp, according to hospital leaders.
And knowing just how important the playground is during dark times, little Hughie has decided to take on the cause. He, along with his best friend Freddie Xavi, are kicking off a huge fundraising appeal to give the children's play area a complete makeover.
