MIXED REACTION AS COUNCIL SAYS PUBLIC EVENTS WILL NOT RETURN FOR ANOTHER YEAR

Sparks fly as city axes Bonfire Night firework displays

PUBLIC bonfire nights and fireworks organised by Manchester Council will not take place for another year.

The council said it will not be reinstating bonfire events, including the huge celebration at Heaton Park and instead use the money elsewhere.

Council-organised events for Bonfire Night were stopped during the pandemic and have never returned.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon said: "We won't be holding bonfires/fireworks events in November as we have reprioritised our funding to support and enhance the delivery of a wide range of free, community focused activities in parks across the city." But the decision has not gone down well with some people, who said it was an example of local traditions being lost.
