The RAC say the busiest times will be between 1pm and 7pm.
Notorious bottlenecks expected to see tailbacks include the M3 stretch from the M25 to the south coast, the anticlockwise M25 between the M1 and M23 junctions, and the M53 on the route from Chester to Liverpool.
A survey for the RAC suggests an anticipated 3 million car journeys will be made on Friday, rising to 3.7m on Saturday, and reaching a peak of 3.8m on Christmas Eve.
