Director General Rakesh Pal, the 25th chief of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), passed away on Sunday following a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Chennai.

Pal, who had assumed his role as ICG chief on July 19 last year, was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital after complaining of chest pain. He was scheduled to attend an ICG event alongside Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Defence Minister Singh expressed his condolences on social media platform X, stating: “Deeply saddened at the untimely demise of Shri Rakesh Pal, DG, Indian Coast Guard in Chennai today. He was an able and committed officer under whose leadership ICG was making big strides in strengthening India’s maritime security." The minister later visited the hospital to pay his respects.

Pal, an Uttar Pradesh native, is survived by his wife Dipa Pal and two daughters. Arrangements are being made to transport his mortal remains to Delhi.
