National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) members working at the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa in Watloo, Pretoria, are set to strike after a bid to reach an agreement with the employer failed at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
Economist Dawie Roodt said: "This is the nature of the political and social environment in which we live and also a result of the labour legislation in South Africa.
"The labour legislation in SA is so submissive that it protects labourers in particular, which is not necessarily wrong, but it means that labourers can strike and disrupt quite a lot," he said.
Roodt said the balance between employer and employee was not what it should be.
"Because economic growth is weak, employers cannot afford higher salaries," he added.
