GREEN FUND: PRIVATE AND PUBLIC RESOURCES WILL SPEED UP DEVELOPMENT OF SECTOR
More research money is flowing into hydrogen projects worldwide, with proponents of hydrogen fuel cells and internal combustion engines using hydrogen as fuel claiming these will be the power plants of the future rather than batteries and electric motors.
SA is getting in on the action and several studies are underway to look at the feasibility of building plants to produce "green hydrogen" - which is hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources.
Producing hydrogen using electricity from a coal-fired power plant defeats the aim of sustainability, as is the case when running an electric car and recharging it by burning fossil fuels.
For investors, hydrogen has not taken off in the same way as electric vehicles (EV). They need to search a bit harder for investment opportunities, in contrast to the hype surrounding EVs and batteries - but the opportunities are starting to appear.
