Over the past couple of weeks, I shared some adventures and lessons learnt from unlikely mentors – my colleagues Anna and Norman at Ideal Supermarket and Café in Parkmore.

Priceless lessons

I was an underage worker living the dream of earning my own cash and exposed to the nightmare less equal South Africans endured.

My second job, at the Riverside Spar in Bryanston improved my hourly wage. At R3 an hour I felt like I was lining my pockets with gold. Because of legal grafting age, it allowed me to work longer hours at better pay.

It was during the few years I cashiered and cut cold meats at Spar that my horizons were broadened.
