As the Human Metaneumovirus (HMPV) has been gaining global attention following an outbreak in China and two cases have been reportedly detected in Karnataka, activists in Pune are calling on authorities to open the 100-bed epidemic complex built within the Aundh District Hospital (ADH) premises following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The building, constructed after the second wave of the pandemic, is fully ready to use, yet, activists claim that it remains unused even after the Director of Health Services visited the premises a year ago.
"Even though there are no cases of HMPV in Pune or Maharashtra, the authorities should be prepared to deal with the virus. They constructed an epidemic hospital—what is it being made for if it can't be used during emergencies?" activists ask.
