₹10,000 cr illegal Forex trade: How firms layer funds
The Free Press Journal|September 22, 2024
In the alleged Rs10,000 crore fraud involving Cyprus-based OctaFX, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has said that the firm, which is very popular among Indian traders, is using forex trading as a front to launder proceeds from illegal betting.
Ashish Singh

This process, commonly referred to as 'layering' in money laundering schemes, allows the platform to mix illicit funds with legitimate transactions, making it difficult for the authorities to pin the money trail. OctaFX has nearly two crore users in India.

The ED said that layering obscures the origin of money and manage customer losses deceptively. Sources said that when customers face losses, companies like OctaFX may use their betting funds to issue payments / profits to maintain an illusion of financial gains, misleading them into believing that their investments are performing well. This tactic is temporary but prevents clients from becoming suspicious.
