They alleged that the BMC has sponsored the cookers for MLA Dilip Lande to woo voters for the upcoming assembly elections. Some of them also alleged that the cookers are of "sub-standard" quality and can prove lifethreatening.
On August 13, the FPJ had highlighted a pressure cooker scam in the ward (Kurla, Chandivali, Sakinaka and Powai), with cookers procured by the BMC (allegedly at an inflated rate) being distributed by Lande under his party's name. The BMC had purchased 50,000 cookers at Rs2,498 each, four times higher than the retail market price. Residents claimed that the MRP printed on the cookers is Rs1,545.
The cookers were to be distributed among the poor citizens under a municipal social welfare scheme.
