In its request to the Speaker's office, the party submitted that it needs front row seats for Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who represents Rae Bareli; party general secretary and Alappuzha MP K.C. Venugopal; Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi; and Mavelikkara MP and Congress Working Committee member Kodikunnil Suresh. However, senior party leader Priyanka Gandhi, who took oath on Thursday, will have to occupy a rear seat being a first timer.Usually the front row seats are allotted to senior parliamentarians or party leaders. As for Rahul Gandhi, he sits right opposite the Defence Minister since he holds the post of LoP which is at par with Cabinet Ministers. It was after 10 years this year that the Congress got this post as its numbers rose sharply in the Lower House and crossed the criteria of 10 per cent mark of all Lok Sabha seats.While it is entitled to three more front row seats, the Samajwadi Party, which is the second biggest Opposition party with 37 seats, has requested for two front row seats for its president, floor leader and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav and Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad.
